Pre-inspection checklist

The below checklist is to help property managers, tenants and homeowners to prepare for a pool safety inspection by understanding the the core safety requirements prior to one of the Pool Safe Certifiers team attending the property to carry out an inspection.
All answers to the questions should be

  • Does the Gate open away from the pool?
  • Is the gate latch 1500mm from the ground?
  • When closed, is the gate secure and unable to be pulled free?
  • Does the gate self-close and lock from any position? (note: long grass impeding any closing will need to be cut prior to inspection)
  • Is the gap between the gate and the fence less than 10mm?
  • Does the gate close from resting on the strike plate?
  • Are the hinges 900mm apart? And non climbable?
  • Is the gap between the gate and the ground below less than 100mm?

  • Are all pool fence panels present with all fence fixings tight and secure?
  • Is the gap between the fence and the ground less that 100mm?
  • Are all gaps in the fence smaller that 100mm?
  • Are there no direct door or window access to the pool? Or are the windows which open directly into the pool area open only a maximum of 100mm or have a security type screen over it?
  • Is the fence height 1200mm or higher?
  • Is the fence free of sharp hazards and edges ?
  • Is the distance between the climbable horizontal rails greater than 900mm?
  • Is the CPR sign current and in clear view from inside the pool area?

  • Are climbable items removed from near the fence?
  • Have trees near the fence been trimmed so children cannot use them to climb?
  • Is there a clear 300mm on the inside of the fence and a clear 1200mm on the outside of the fence?
  • Is there a 900mm clear zone where the pool fence intersects another fence?

Please note this checklist is designed to help individuals prepare for a pool safety inspection, however answering ‘yes’ to all does not guarantee certification. Additionally, this checklist is not a substitute for having a licensed pool safety inspector inspect your pool or spa. Understanding the requirements

Below outlines the three key safety standards that often stop pools from certified on first inspection in Queensland:

  • Pool Fencing: The pool must be enclosed with a fence at least 1200mm high and without gaps.
  • Gates and Latches: Gates must self-close and self-latch, opening away from the pool.
  • Climbing Hazards: No climbable objects should be near the fence or gates.

For a detailed overview of the regulations, head to the www.qbcc.qld.gov.au and click swimming pool safety . All the information on the full requirements can be found there.
